Making a Quilt

Nancy is buying the background material for her quilt. The quilt is a square measuring 9 feet by 9 feet. The material costs $4.75 a square yard. How much will the material cost?

*Remember to explain your thinking - How did you get your answer?

  1. first u would multiply 9 times 9 2 get 81 and then u multiply $4.75 times 81 2 get $384.75

  2. I'm glad that you both gave it a try, but unfortunately neither of you are correct. You both had great ideas - Lucas you knew to divide 9 feet by 3 to get 3 yarrds, and Patrick you knew to find the area length x width. If you both put your ideas together you would come up with the correct answer.

9 feet divided by 3 gives you 3 yards,
3 yards x 3 yards gives you 9 square yards.
    $4.75 x 9 square yards = $42.75
