Which has the larger Area?

George has two geometric shapes. One is a square with sides that measure 3 inches and the other is a circle with a diameter of 3 inches. Which shape has the larger area?

*REMEMBER:
Show your formulas and the numbers that you put in the calculator. I need to know how you got your answer!

  1. the square becuz it has 3x3=9 3/2=1.5 1.5x3.14=4.71 therefor the square is bigger

  2. the square. the reaxon why is becuase for the square you would need to mulitple the b and h. sence it is a square and it has even side, i put 3x3 wich equal 9.with a circle you have to times the raidus by 3.14(pi). but it was the diameter george knows about. so yuo would need to devide by 2. wich would egual 1.5 1.5xpi=4.71.so in the end square area=9, circle area +4.71

  3. i put for the square 3.14 times 4 and a half times 4 and a half =2821.15
and the circle i put 3.14 times 1 and a half times 1 and a half =5.18 i think the square has the bigger area

  4. You are correct in picking the square. The formula for the square is b x h = 3 x 3 = 9in squared. The circle is incorrect - the formaula is 3.14 x r x r = 3.14 x 1.5 x 1.5 = 7.065 in squared. You onlt multiplied the radius once!
